Indelible Grace

Much of the rich theology and great poetry of the Church has been "lost" in the day of contemporary worship's "I Can Sing of Your Love Forever" and "Better Is One Day's". Nothing against Matt Redman or Darlene Zschech - both are incredibly talented musicians and vocalists. However, it saddens me when I see that the art of Hymns has been lost in many churches as they revert to the popularity of contemporary worship. I've been attending a PCA (Presbyterian Church of America) church these last four years in Philadelphia, which has reintroduced to me once again the beauty of these immortal classics. My church's worship includes many of these great hymns on a weekly basis and what I appreciate most is how the worship team joins the music of our culture with the words of our forefathers and foremothers, ie. Indelible Grace, which is a voice calling this generation back to something rich and solid beyond the fluff and the trendy. Indelible Grace's music has shown me that thinking and worship are not mutually exclusive and I appreciate how it opens up a world of passion and truth and makes these hymns more than just an archaic curiosity for the religiously sentimental.

Worship is made formative. Here is one of my favorites:

Thy Mercy, My God - John Stocker, 1776

1. Thy mercy, my God, is the theme of my song,
The joy of my heart. and the boast of my tongue;
Thy free grace alone, from the first to the last,
Hath won my affections, and bound my soul fast.

2. Without Thy sweet mercy I could not live here;
Sin would reduce me to utter despair;
But, through Thy free goodness, my spirits revive,
And He that first made me still keeps me alive.

3. Thy mercy is more than a match for my heart,
Which wonders to feel its own hardness depart;
Dissolved by Thy goodness, I fall to the ground,
And weep to the praise of the mercy I’ve found.

4. Great Father of mercies, Thy goodness I own,
And the covenant love of Thy crucified Son;
All praise to the Spirit, Whose whisper divine
Seals mercy, and pardon, and righteousness mine.
All praise to the Spirit, Whose whisper divine
Seals mercy, and pardon, and righteousness mine.

Turkey Day

Happy post-Thanksgiving Day to all! Or shall I say Happy Black Friday? Prior to posting this new entry, I read through my Thanksgiving Day post a year ago and am simply amazed with how quickly this past year has flown by. Where is time going? Nonetheless, this year was a particularly special thanksgiving, spent with close friends, and my favorite cousin in the world, AL, who flew into Philly yesterday afternoon from Vancouver. We gobbled down some turkey and satiated ourselves with a variety of side dishes, along with some nice French red wine that AirForceGuy brought to go with dinner. So, without futher ado, here is a pictorial account of Thanksgiving dinner held at mine and Irishgirl's place.

IrishGirl and my cousin, AL, appearing to do some last minute preparations in our very tiny kitchen. Although I'm thinking that Irishgirl looks like she's doing a little "preparing" of her own, if you get my drift.

AirForceGuy carving the turkey. His presence seems to take over our very tiny kitchen, doesn't it?

Me and my partner in Black-Friday-Shopper-in- crime, AL, before dinner. Last night we had this great idea of waking up at some ungodly hour to hit the Black Friday sales this morning. She was awake by 3:30 AM, while I woke up at 4 AM. While it may seem like we're hardcore shoppers, we really aren't. We did it just for a good story to tell. Really. We did. If anything else, we had a lot of good laughs this morning!

Thanksgiving dinner with the rest of the gang. Obviously, I'm not in this picture since I'm the one taking it. Funny how this picture looks quite similar to the dinner party I held for my Geographical Orphan pals back in September. Like the Rothko on the wall? ;)

AL looking stuffed. AirforceGuy engaged in some conversation. SeminaryBoy and IrishTeacher viewing their digital camera. And finally, my empty plate next to IrishTeacher's.

Post-Thanksgiving dinner consumption. IrishGirl enjoying her white wine, which AirforceGuy brought all the way from Turkey.

So there you have it. Thanksgiving Dinner with my mish-mash of close friends and my favorite cousin in the world. I won't delve into the usual "I'm thankful for" list, however I will share that I am so thankful for my family away from my family. These are my precious friends whom I treasure greatly and I am incredibly thankful that God has placed them in my life out here in the east coast for this season in my life.

I am so unquestionably blessed.

Aller En Vacances En France - Pt. Deux

Alright, I know I'm waaay overdue in posting these pictures. Tonight was a late night at work and since I'm pretty wired, I figured that I may as well post some of the photos from my trip and some excerpts from my journal. So here goes.....

10-7-06
This is so surreal! Am I really here in France? From the time I awoke yesterday morning in Jersey to our arrival here in our hotel, it all felt like a blur. And now I am going to explore this amazing city tonight! Pinch me, I feel like I'm in a dream.

10-8-06
Have I already mentioned how surreal it still feels, being here in France? As we climbed up la Tour Eiffel yesterday, feeling like I was in a movie set, I had that famous song from Casablanca running through my head...

"You must remember this
A kiss is still a kiss
A sigh is just a sigh
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by."

Walking along the "la Rive Sienne" was breathtaking and catching a glimpse of Parisian nightlife was only but a taste of what I know is going to be a delicious city.....I am completely smitten!

10-9-06
We are at this moment on the the train heading south towards Cahors, about a five hour train ride from Paris. Our final stop is the town of Luzech, which is approximately 20 minutes away from Cahors. We plan to spend the next few days in a house we are renting in Luzech and I look forward to some down time while we are down there. Ada and Kara missed the train (we think) and so it's just Ami, Angie, Naron, and I. Nothing like adding a little spice onto our adventure, huh? I'm sitting next to this very attractive French guy - bright blue eyes, tussled sandy brown hair. Of course I tried to engage him in conversation - in French of course - but I guess he wasn't too impressed with my North American accent. Baaah, he seemed a little snotty anyways. For the most part, my experience with French people, especially Parisians, has been fairly positive. It's been pretty amusing, my attempts at speaking French - those six years of French classes have finally paid off! (Along with the handy French phrase book I purchased at SeaTac airport last weekend. Hehehe!)

10/10/06 - Midnight
It's been an interesting and stressful day. We arrived safely here in Luzech late this afternoon, but not without a few mishaps. Helene, the owner of the house we're renting, did not write down her house number on the packet she gave us. We were in the correct vicinity of the house, but we did not know which house it was due to the fact that we did not know the house number. Our taxi driver was totally unimpressed. Helene's friends, an English couple who live on the other side of town, whose phone number we had, drove over and rescued us. It turned out that we were standing right across the street from the house. Yeah, we felt like fools. Helene's friends, Geoff and Sue, are a retired couple who've been living in France for the last few years. They've taken us under their wings and have been incredibly gracious and providing us a wealth of information of the region. They even lent us their bikes so we could explore the surrounding towns!!!

More pics of Luzech.....

It's late and I'm half asleep, therefore I will have to say - to be continued...

Crazy

I've been on a Seal kick this past week. Probably because I just downloaded his Best 1991-2004 and have been listening to this CD all week at work. Crazy.

"CRAZY"

In a church, by the face,
He talks about the people going under.
Only child know...A man decides after seventy years,
That what he goes there for, is to unlock the door.
While those around him criticize and sleep...
And through a fractal on a breaking wall,
I see you my friend, and touch your face again.
Miracles will happen as we trip.

But we're never gonna survive,
unless We get a little crazy
No we're never gonna survive,
unless We are a little Crazy

Crazy are the people walking through my head.
One of them's got a gun to shoot the other one.
And yet together they were friends at school
Ohh, get it, get it, get it, get it no no!
If all were there when we first took the pill,
Then maybe...
Miracles will happen as we speak.

No no, never survive, unless we get a little... beat...
Oh darlin...
In a sky full of people, only some want to fly,
Isn't that crazy?
In a world full of people, only some want to fly,
Isn't that crazy?
Crazy...
In a heaven of people there's only some want to fly,
Ain't that crazy?
Oh babe... Oh darlin...
In a world full of people there's only some want to fly,
Isn't that crazy?
Isn't that crazy... Isn't that crazy... Isn't that crazy...

Ohh...

And then you see things
The size
Of which you've never known before
They'll break it
Someday...
Only child know....

Them things
The size
Of which you've never known before
Someday... Someway... Someday... Someway...Someday... Someway... Someday...

The Scheherazade Project

Alright, according to that ol' adage, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. A few of my fellow bloggers have taken part of The Scheherazade Project, and I have to say, most of their writing has been nothing short of amazing. Nonetheless, I figured I would take a crack at it and write about the latest topic. I'm really nervous about posting this, but here goes...

First Night

Although the whole set up seemed a bit sketchy, Karah was thrilled and her heart filled with a somewhat quiet anxiousness. She knew this may be the one.

A co-worker of hers from work, Natty, set them up about a month ago, which she found rather odd because Natty never quite displayed any amicable feelings towards her. In fact, according to office gossip, Natty had her eye on the job promotion. The same one that Karah, according to her boss, was a shoe in for. After working together with Natty on a big work project, things appeared to have improved between the two of them. Happy hours were shared every Wednesday evenings at the local Bishop's Collar, coffee break socials at 10 AM, inside office jokes, which eventually led to weekend beach volleyball leagues and movie nights at each other's apartments. While she welcomed this change in her friendship with Natty, she also had this sense of uneasiness; a nudge which appeared to be whispering in her ear, "careful, careful, careful..." As the friendship with Natty progressed, the more she deafened her ears to the whispers, the nudges.

Natty had entered Karah's office one Monday afternoon, eagerly sharing about her little jaunt through a matching service through the internet that she signed up for a few weeks ago. She shared about a date she went on Saturday evening with one of the guys she was matched with online, Mark. According to her description of this man, he seemed like a dream, but Natty wasn't interested because throughout the entire evening with this man, she kept thinking how perfect he would be for Karah. So Natty spent the next week coaxing Karah into meeting Mark for drinks, encouraging her that they were made for each other.

Karah finally relented into meeting Mark at the Arte Cafe and of course, as they say it, the rest was history. The chemistry between the two was nothing short of explosive. They were absolutely inseparable afterwards. And Karah? Well, let's just say that she was smitten.

Karah was caught in a whirlwind of emotions as the intensity of their feelings for one another grew. In the mean time, while Natty continued to be supportive of their relationship, Karah kept wondering in her head if Natty was still after that promotion at work.

After three months of dating, Mark invited Karah to accompany him on a business trip to Hawaii. He told her with that disarming smile of his, that there wasn't anything wrong with mixing a little bit of pleasure with business. Karah, in her excitement agreed to travel with him, dreaming of warm romantic evenings, walking hand in hand along the beach, watching the tropical sunsets...

It was planned that they would travel to Hawaii together, but Karah would have to leave a few days earlier than Mark because she needed to get back to work to meet a deadline. While Karah was excited for the trip, she was also feeling somewhat uneasy. After three months of dating, Karah and Mark had not yet consummated the relationship. See, Karah was a virgin and her plan was to save herself for marriage. These days, such a thought almost seemed archaic, but Karah kept to her standards. That is, until she met Mark. After that first meeting, she knew he was the one and so she planned to give herself to Mark in Hawaii.

Their days in Hawaii were spent lazing in the sun drinking mixed cocktails, snorkeling and splashing in the ocean, evening walks along white beaches, Hawaiian luaus and of course, spooning in their hotel room. Karah was wanton and wondered why she bothered to wait so long. But she knew why. She needed to wait until she finally met Mark.

The week flew by so quickly and before they knew it, it was time for Karah to fly back to Chicago. Prior to crossing the security gate, Mark softly kissed Karah good-bye, handing her a small wrapped box, requesting that she open the box during the plane's ascent.

It was torture waiting for her airplane to taxi out of the runway but when it started to ascend into the blue sky, she finally tore through the wrapping paper around the small box. What she discovered was a small coffin which fit neatly on her palm. Karah flipped open the latch and found a small note inside, obviously written by Mark. With widening eyes, her heart filled with indescribable terror as she read what was written on the note:

"Welcome the the world of AIDS"

Meanwhile back in Chicago, Natty received a call from Mark. "She got the note."

And Natty responded with a slow smile.

My Favorite Things #5 (?)

I have literally been such a lazy-ass blogger in this last week or so. My excuse? The boob tube. While I'm not a huge TV junkie, this week has been one for the record books. In the last two evenings, I've spent a total of almost eight hours watching TV. *GASP!!* Iowagirl would be proud. As a result, this blog has obviously suffered. And I still haven't posted pictures from my trip to France like I said I would! It will happen....one of these days. Nonetheless, I shall leave you all with one of my favorite photojournalists' work - "Women in a Dust Storm" by Steve McCurry and has been deemed as one of My Favorite Things:

I have this print hanging on the hallway in my place and every time I look at it, I am constantly struck by the colorful solidarity these Indian women are displaying. The sand storm that's about to happen upon them gives the picture an almost ethereal, yet airy quality to it. I love it.
